1963 Corvette Grand Sport

In late 1961, Zora Arkus-Duntov and his team started working on a special project to develop a race car to reply to the challenge of the Shelby Ford powered Cobra. Duntov had hoped to build at least 125 units, to be considered a production sports car by the international racing rules. He was able to build only 5 units, before GM corporate killed the program. The Grand Sport was an awesome machine, with a 550 bhp 377 cu in motor, tubular chassis and lightweight construction. The five units went into private hands, with some success, but no factory support. Two of the cars were returned to GM in early 1964 to be converted into roadsters. But the reconfigured cars sat at a warehouse for three years, until Roger Penske and George Wintersteen purchased them in 1966.

The model:

Mike built this wonderful '63 Grand Sport using the '65 1/8 scale kit as the starting point, which was obviously heavily modified.
