1956 Roadster
The Corvette had its first body restyle in 1956. For the first time it
had roll up glass windows and power windows became an option. External
door handles and locks also appeared on the model year. A hardtop was also
optional. The headlights were no longer recessed, and coves on the side
allowed 2 tone paint options. The instrument panel was very similar to the
'55. The electrical system changed from 6 to a 12V system. Color
choices for 1956 were: Onyx black, Polo white, Venetian red, Cascade
green, Arctic blue and Aztec copper. Two tone options were beige (not
white) coves with the Venetian red, Aztec copper and Cascade green. Silver coves
were available with the black, white and blue colors.
During the 1956 Daytona speed weeks, Zora and the gang brought 3
Corvettes for the races. The drivers were John Fitch, Betty Skelton and Zora
Arkus-Duntov himself in the modified car. In the modified class, Zora won
first (and overall) in the flying mile race with a 147.3 MPH average. In the
production class, Fitch was first with a 145.5 MPH average and Skelton second
with a 137.7 MPH average.
The official pace car for the event was also a 1956 Corvette.
