2001 Daytona Pace Car
For 2001, the Corvette was again seected as the Pace Car for the Rolex 24 Hours race, but this time it was a coupe that did the job.
The model:
I finished the modeling year
with a simple quick build, just for fun and cooling down on an intensive
modeling year.
This Rolex 24 at Daytona Pace Car Corvette started life as a Promo. It was OK
but there were many imperfections in the finish and they lack detail. So I took
it apart and treated it as a prepainted model. As you can see the paint scheme
is quite complex, so I had to be careful.
Heavy mold lines were removed whenever possible, taking care of the painted
areas.
I added brakes, valve stems, interior mirror and exhaust tips. Everything else
was either polished or painted.
Too bad I didn't take pics of it before taking it apart.
This is by no means a contest contender, but I like how it turned out. Nice
shelf model with visual punch.
The subtle wash in the rescribed panel lines makes a world of difference. Take a look at the gas cap.
Some mold lines could not be completely eliminated without damaging the paint.
The DAYTONA decal in the back was replaced with this one I had from the LeMans Pace Car I built years ago. Careful cutting the slit improves the look greatly.
"Pace Cars and Race Cars" the theme in the walls
The view from the garage's security camera LOL
I detailed all interiors, but been all black inside, it's hard to see and or photograph.
This has become like my signature in models: snap C5 chassis. All you see here is one big chunk of plastic. For a change, I left the screws exposed.
