Robert Wheeler built this Revells ProFinish
kit, #85-1344 Daytona Pace Car

After many years of non official involvement GM re-entered the
world of sports car racing with the C5-R. To commemorate the
appearance of C5-Rs at Daytona and LeMans Corvettes were
used as Pace Cars at both races. An eye-catching scheme was
created for both races, Torch Red/White for Daytona and LeMans
and Nassau Blue/White for LeMans. Revells new ProFinish
kit, #85-1344 will build the red car from either race.
While the kit comes molded in high gloss red plastic with the
white and black pace car scheme painted on and could easily be
built up in an evening, a little extra effort will produce an
even better kit :
- Mold lines around the rear were sanded off and the
plastic repolished. Mold lines on the painted front were
left.
- The decals were by biggest concern being vinyl peel and
stick instead of water slide. Be careful when you apply
them since they cant be moved around once they are
down. On the decals that had clear carrier film I tried
to trim as close as possible then rounded all corners to
eliminate sharp corners that might peel back. After all
decals were applied the body was given a coat of Future
using a wide soft brush. This evened out the different
finishes and hopefully will put a sealing coat over the
decals.
- Various detail painting was also done to the body
including side marker and 3rd brake light, the
A pillar and rubber surrounds on all windows, the black
licence plate frame, back up lights and the outside
mirrors. Corvette on the front plate frame was also given
a black wash to make the letters stand out. Foil disks
were also cut out to fit in the outside mirrors.
- The chassis was painted matte black and detailed with
aluminum. The exhaust pipes were drilled out and the tips
painted chrome.
- The chrome wheels were correct in style but valve stems
from wire were added and the disk brakes from the AMT
97 snap kit were added. If you have a spare set of
R-M 18 inch rear Corvette tires use them. The taller
tires were used on the C5 because they looked better and
this is even noticeable in this scale.
- The interior was painted matte black, flocking was used
for carpets and the dash detailed using paint and Future
Overall Comment
While the presence of the Snaptite label would suggest an
inferior promo style kit, a little work will justify putting this
car on a shelf beside your best.
