Review:

In 1991 AMT released an excellent 1970 LT-1 coupe and a year later an equally good ‘72 convertible. The same year two promos based on the coupe introduced the idea of the retro-promo. In 1993 kit #6782 a curbside snapfast version of the coupe became available. Over the intervening years all of these kits have been discontinued.

The snapfast has now been reissued but this time with six small pots of paint and a brush. In all other ways both kits are identical including the dark red molding. Fit is excellent and detail on the body accurate and fine although some sanding will be required on sharp edges and corners. The interior is also well done with separate seats, steering wheel and dash. For the young modeler the instruction sheet will be of great help with complete painting instructions. The decal sheet includes the LT-1 hood stripe in both black and white as well as a choice of licence plates.

The box describes the car as a ZR1 which was the designation for a special purpose engine package but the hood is for the LT1 of which over 1200 cars were built. Since there were few external differences between 1970-1972 the car can be built is any year. The built up model on the box is actually painted as a late 71 or 72 which had the outer cover of the parking lights in amber. In 1970 they were clear and the bulbs were amber.

Final Comment:

I applaud AMT’s decision to provide all in one kits for the young modeler and it is nice to see this kit back on the store shelves. It is unfortunate that the excellent glue kit of the same car is not also available, perhaps this time with the standard small block hood.
