1971

There would be no styling changes for ‘71. Corvette engineers were busy working to meet the approaching government standards. The first of these standards to be met in 1971 was the need to reduce engine octane requirements to no more then 91.

The 454 would continue to be the most popular engine choice but the days of the big block were numbered. The 425hp LS6 would be the power king of this period although production was limited to 188 cars. It would be only a few years before numbers like this were but a dream of what had been.

Overall production was 21,801 cars, up from the 1970 figure but so was the price. What was interesting was that convertible production was dropping. This was the first year that production of soft tops was less then 50% of coupes. 1968 had been the last year that convertible production had been higher then coupes.

The Corvette sales brochure encourages owners "to buy an image." Little did they know that Corvette would soon become only a pale ‘image’ of the performance car it had been.
