"Big John" Mazmanian's CM/SP '61 CORVETTE

This model represents the 1961 Corvette that was originally built by "Big John Mazmanian". It was the first of a series of Candy Apple Red drag cars campaigned by "Big John". I was first attracted to the car when it appeared in Rod&Custom magazine in 1962. The car has recently been restored and is on display at the NHRA Museum in Pomona. It also reappeared in R&C in 1999.

The model:

Because no model kit of a 61 Corvette was available, this model was fabricated using the back section of an AMT 62 Corvette and the front section of a Revell Pro-Modeler 58 Corvette.

The hardtop roof was re-shaped from the 58 soft top with Revell 1/24 57 Corvette quarter windows.

Model Car Garage photo-etched details were used over Testors Rattle Can Candy Apple Red with a gold base coat.

The chassis from the 58 was utilised with the front suspension a-arms cut away and hinged to give the correct look to the raised front end. The six rear taillight bezels are aluminium tubing. The rest of the parts are from a variety of kits. Slixx decals provided the licence plate and window markings.
