Corvette Model Gallery

1966

While stylists had originally considered a mild restyling for ‘66, the final result introduced few changes. A new square egg crate grill was introduced. One reference and an original owner I spoke to insist that this grill came out in ‘65. Other external changes included the removal of the vents on the C pillar, a slight change to the Corvette script on the rear deck and the addition of this script to the drivers side of the hood, the addition of more ridges to the rocker panels and of course different hubcaps and gas cap. Back up lights which had been optional from 1963 to ‘65 became standard. These clear lenses replaced the inboard red taillights. Minor interior changes included additional pleats in the seats and the availability of headrests as an option. Mechanically the 396 was acknowledged in its real form as a 427 and fuel injection was no longer available as an option. Sales continued to climb reaching a mid-year record of 27,720 units.
