Owens-Corning Corvette
Tony DeLorenzo, son of a GM VP, ordered a special L-88 Corvette from the plant in 1968 with obvious racing intentions. He was part of the Owens-Corning racing team and Jerry Thompson, a Chevrolet engineer, his fellow driver. The interior was stripped and only essential gauges were installed. A roll cage was added and the L-88 was race prepared. Dick Guldstrand helped with the suspension setup. After a rough start in '68 with some bad luck, the car, with Tony and Jerry at the wheel, proceeded to win the 1969 SCCA's A Production class, breaking the Cobra's string of consecutive championships dating back to 1963. The car won 22 consecutive races in the A Production class, and class wins in Sebring and Daytona. At 197 MPH, it was the fastest Corvette ever clocked at Sebring in 1969.
