1964 Dick Guldstrand's Corvette Racer

The model:

Jay L. Kovar built this special 64 racer, as driven by Dick Guldstrand

"This was a red 1964 convertible Corvette Dick Guldstrand drove.  There are many pics of the car in various racing books, all black and white.  I've only see one other build up, and it was in black.  I started to do it in black but thought better and actually called Dick at his California shop!  He said the car is RED.  This is the AMT 1963 convertible kit with a '64 hood.  The hood is slightly open to facilitate cooling and perhaps to lessen the lifting of the front end at speed.  Wipers removed.  The buckle is built from the kits seatbelt part.  The roll bar and "roller skate" is scratch built.  Dicks buddies put it on his car because he had a tendency to drive it upside down.  The windscreen is custom and the tonneau cover is made from Elmers soaked tissue paper.  The pipes are custom from a mid '70's side pipe kit part.  the wheels are American Racing wheels from the Motion '69 kit.  The front grill was the last part I had to procure and comes from the vintage AMT '65 Corvette customizing kit (resin copy of original).  the side mirror is from the Monogram "Black Rat" 1965 kit.  Decals are a mix of Internet aftermarket and leftovers.  I actually met Guldstrand in 2003 at the Corvette 50th Anniversary Bash at the NCM.  I plan to build more of his racers as time allows.  Great guy, great car!"
