2005 Coupe
The C6 debuted in the 2004 Detroit Auto Show. Later, the convertible was announced in Geneva. The C6 is not a radical departure from the C5. The frame, chassis and many other components were upgrades based on the C5 platform. Externally, one of the biggest changes is the exposed headlights, ending a tradition that started back in 1963. The C5 was most likely the last production car in the world to use hidden headlights. The engine is the new LS-2, a 6.0 liter small block from the Gen-III family of engines. It produces 400 HP and 400 lbs/ft of torque.
The model
This is my 3rd and best C6 Corvette Coupe so far. Magnetic
red tricoat paint from where else: Cobra Colors. This is my first attempt
at a tricoat paint. There is a midcoat after the base coat before the clear. The
effect is great, yet it is not that visible in the pictures. Kind of a red
pearl effect. Unfortunately, the camera "sees" this color very close to how it
also "sees" the Daytona Sunset Orange. Since I was fearing just that, I
took the hard decision of going not with my favorite interior color (cashmere)
but rather with steel gray interiors. Obviously the biggest modification on this
one is the opened hatch. I scratchbuilt the struts. they are all black in the
1:1 but I left them metal color so they could stand out. Even so they are a bit
hard to see. Other modifications include all those in the Daytona Sunset Orange
(opened grille, seatbelts, emblems, oil dipstick etc), plus I corrected
beforehand the wheel alignment problem inside the wheel well by modifying the
chassis location point. I don't have a picture of the chassis of this car, but
it is identical to the orange one posted in the gallery as well. No I
didn't forget the door handles. They represent the body color option.
Incredibly, this model is not officially finished! I have a set of golf clubs
and a golf bag, (courtesy of John Shariski) that I need to finish to
put in the trunk.
My favorite picture.
Since this color was discontinued before the end of the 2005 run, (replaced by
Monterey red) that makes this model a 2005. So I can call the Daytona Sunset
Orange a 2006 :)
The wheels represent the polished aluminum option, NOT the chrome ones. I
airbrushed light coats of chrome silver over the chrome to achieve the effect.
This time the wheel alignment with the body was corrected beforehand
This pic is the closest to the actual color.
Close up to see the brake details. Z51 performance suspension with cross drilled
rotors.
Here you can see the scratchbuilt struts that support the hatch.
Now you see the roof...
Now you don't
How about a night time shot? I would sleep next to it as well...
