The Shark Years - 1968 thru 1982

Introduction to the C-3

The bar had been set very high with the popular Sting Ray so expectations were even greater for the new Mako Shark II inspired Corvette. While the Larry Shinoda penned show car had excited everyone who saw it, what finally arrived in the dealer show rooms clearly demonstrated that compromise had over ruled style and purpose. The new Shark was a more lush and powerful boulevard cruiser then a purpose-built sports car. In retrospect it is not surprising as Corvette was being pulled in several directions; the desire for more power already being promised by the early American muscle cars, a desire to compete with the increasing sophistication of European sports cars and a need to meet the technological superiority already demonstrated by GM’s own mid and rear engine concept cars. Hanging over their heads was also increasing government intervention at all levels of car production; design, safety and performance.

Despite the compromises, battles and initial resistance the popularity of this generation would continue to grow throughout its record 14 years of production. Many of its initial shortcomings would be corrected while others could not, but today the Sharks like each generation retains its cadre of dedicated supporters.
