The Sting Ray Years ~ 1963 to 1967
Now that Corvette enthusiasts can look back, it is obvious that 1963 was a monumental year. For many the C2, Sting Rays, Mid-Years or whatever collective name is given to the 1963 through 1967 models were and always will be the quintessential Corvette.
Clues as to what was to come surfaced early. In 1959 GM design chief Bill Mitchell had designer Larry Shinoda create the XP-87 SS Stingray racer with its unmistakable C2 lines. A year earlier there was the XP-700 with a tail treatment that would be introduced on production cars in 1961 and would continue into the midyears. In 1960 and 1961 the XP-755 Shark and Mako Shark appeared but rather then prototypes they were retro designs based on the prototype whose design work had started in 1959 and had been shown in mock up form to GM management as early as April 1960.
