The Solid Axle Years - 1953 thru 1962

The first generation of Corvettes set the production standards to construct a sports car out of fiberglass.. and put Chevrolet and GM into sports cars business and racing. Only 300 units were made in 1953, with a 6 cylinder engine and automatic transmission. The now legendary small block V8, debuted in 1955 with 265 cubic inches. Mechanical fuel injection arrived in 1957, on top of 283 cubic inches, to reach the coveted plateau of "One horsepower per cubic inch". A four speed manual tranny also debuted in '57, putting the Corvette into serious racing. The Bill Mitchell's XP-700 built in 1958 laid the basic design for the 1961 Corvette and the future Sting Ray generation.
