Corvette Model Gallery

1976 Corvette

For the first time in history, the Corvette was NOT available in a convertible form.  Only the coupe body style was available from 1976 onwards.  It would be another generation and 10 years later for a convertible to return to the Vette's lineup.  Also new was a steel underbelly for weight reduction and heat isolation from the hot catalytic converter, introduced the previous year.  The optional aluminum wheels were finally offered as option YJ8. The vents in the rear deck were eliminated and the steering wheel was changed to a common unit shared with the Vega and other Chevy models.  The air induction configuration was changed and as a result, the hood of the '76 is unique to that year.  The base engine was rated at 180 hp and the optional L-82 was rated at 210 hp.  Ten colors were offered, with classic white the most common with 10,674 units.  Dark green was the rarest with only 2,038 units.  Mahogany, a dark brown color was offered in '76, discontinued for '77 but eventually reappeared in '78.  Total production for 1976 was 46,558 units, a record number at that time. It now ranks 5th in all time production records.

The model

Brian Baldwin built this model to replicate his father's car.

The finish is Testors Transparent Black Window Tint sprayed on Dupli-Color Cordova Brown automotive paint.

He grafted the roof from the Revell 69 Kit # 7149 on to the AMT 1975 Roadster # 31813 and filled the rear air vents.

Wheels and tires also from the '69 Kit.  Front suspension lowered.  Model Car Garage photo etched details and scripts.
